Which Intensive Driving Course Do I Need? The Complete 2026 Guide

One of the most common questions we receive at Golden Mile Driving School is:

“Which intensive driving course should I book?”

Choosing the wrong course can cost you both time and money. A course that’s too short may leave you unprepared for your practical driving test, and unlike regular weekly lessons, it’s often difficult to add extra tuition at short notice during an intensive course.

That’s why we always prefer to recommend a course that’s slightly longer rather than one that’s too short. If, once you’re driving with your instructor, it’s clear you’ve booked more hours than you need, we can usually reduce the remaining tuition and offer a parital refund, However, if you’ve booked too few hours, adding extra time isn’t always possible due to instructor availability and test schedules.

It’s also worth remembering that every learner progresses at a different pace. Even experienced drivers can benefit from extra time behind the wheel to build confidence, perfect manoeuvres, practise challenging roads and roundabouts, and complete mock driving tests before the real thing.

This guide will help you choose the most suitable intensive driving course based on your current experience, giving you the best possible chance of passing your driving test.

Complete Beginners

Recommended Course: 10 Day Intensive Driving Course

If you’ve never driven a car before or have done less than 10 hours then our 10 Day Intensive Course is the ideal choice.

This course includes approximately 50 hours of one-to-one tuition with a fully qualified DVSA Approved Driving Instructor.

During your course you’ll learn:

  • Cockpit checks
  • Moving away safely
  • Clutch control
  • Gear changes
  • Junctions
  • Roundabouts
  • Dual carriageways
  • Parking manoeuvres
  • Emergency stops
  • Independent driving
  • Mock driving tests
  • Test preparation

Our beginner course is designed to take you from your very first lesson to driving test standard.

I've Done Around 10–15 Hours

Recommended Course: 7 Day Intensive Course

If you already understand the basics of driving and can:

  • Move away safely
  • Stop correctly
  • Change gears confidently
  • Drive on quieter roads

then our 7 Day Course is normally the perfect option.

This allows enough time to build confidence before introducing more challenging situations such as busy roundabouts, dual carriageways and mock driving tests.

I've Done Around 25 hours

Recommended Course: 5 Day Intensive Course

If you’ve already had around 25 hours of professional tuition, you probably don’t need to start again.

Our 5 Day Course focuses on refining your driving skills while preparing you for your practical driving test.

Typical areas covered include:

  • Complex roundabouts
  • Parking manoeuvres
  • Independent driving
  • Test routes
  • Mock tests
  • Building confidence

Around 30 Hours Experience

Recommended Course: 4 Day Intensive Course

Many learners who have around 30 hours of previous lessons simply need more consistency and confidence.

A 4 Day Course provides concentrated tuition while removing bad habits that may have developed over time.

Recently Failed Your Driving Test?

2 or 3 Day Crash Course

If you’ve recently failed your driving test but were otherwise ready, a shorter intensive course is often all that’s needed.

These courses focus on:

  • Correcting serious faults
  • Refreshing manoeuvres
  • Practising local test routes
  • Restoring confidence before your next test

Why Experience Matters More Than Days

Many people search online for:

“Fastest way to pass my driving test.”

The truth is that there isn’t a single course that’s right for everyone.

A complete beginner cannot realistically expect to become test ready in just two or three days, while an experienced learner doesn’t usually need ten days of tuition. However we would always promote slightly overbooking your course just incase you need the extra time.

Choosing the correct course gives you the best chance of passing first time.
